Chairman’s Corner

I am honoured to have been selected as the 2018 Chair of Omagh Triathlon Club.  I hope I can emulate and build upon the work of my predecessors.

I see my role as being primarily to facilitate the smooth running of the Club Committee. Our Club is governed by a strong and diverse committee, all decisions are made after thorough discussions, we may not get the decisions right all the time, but my role is to ensure that all issues do gain a full and robust discussion and that decisions are made collectively and in a democratic manner.

Our Club is all about its Members, it was set up by triathletes, for triathletes. That is for past, present and future triathletes. I have always found  it to be an open and welcoming club, all people regardless of their level of ability or commitment are welcome.I was made to feel welcome when I joined, I hope that this spirit of welcome and fellowship continues during my time as Chair and in the years to come.

Your Club aims to facilitate, support, nourish, motivate and energise you, our members, by ensuring that training, coaching and competition options are available for you to participate in. Training sessions are listed on this website. If there is something you want added to the schedule, please feel able to propose it to any committee member.

I can say without hesitation that triathlon is for everybody…every shape, every size, every level of fitness, every motivation state, every level of competiveness…yes there is a triathlon which you can do. If you have any doubts let me challenging some misconceptions generally held about triathlon, the chief  one usually is that triathlon is only for super fit, toned, committed and driven people! Wellyou can be like that, but you don’t have to be, we do have triathletes in the club who do fit that description; but the majority of club members do triathlons and train for triathlon because they love it and enjoy it. Most members are sensible, average people –some train everyday, others don’t train every day or every week. Some know more about food (fuel) that a Dietician, but some drink beer (or wine) and eat cake. Some love to train at 5am, many like a lie in! As I said there are as many types of triathlete as there are triathletes!

Whatever you do this year, can I ask that you cherish and love it, be thankful that you are healthy and well enough to train for or complete or compete in a triathlon.  Do be competitive but don’t let that deprive you of the joy which pushing the boundaries of your physical endurance brings for you.

I wish you all a great year in sport.
